Communications Program

The mission of the CAP Communications (COMMS) Program is to organize and maintain a reliable, nationwide, point-to-point, air-to-ground, and ground mobile radio capability in support of the missions of CAP.

The Primary purpose of a CAP COMMS Facility is to provide the commander with the means for controlling units and their activities. In addition, CAP COMMS resources provide the commander at each echelon the ability to communicate with superior and subordinate commanders.

Long Island Group Communications Department and Capabilities:

  • LIG COMM’S is responsible for CAP radio communications in Nassau and Suffolk Counties operating from Group Headquarters at Long Island Mac Arthur Airport. The Comm’s center supports local, regional and national CAP communications via radios operating on a broad spectrum of frequencies. Multiple antennas and emergency power capabilities supports reliable, highly available communications in adverse conditions.

  • COMMS is responsible for installation and maintenance of communications equipment in CAP vehicles, and for hand-held radios used by ground teams during missions and exercises. COMMS is also responsible for airborne and ground radio direction finding equipment.

  • During emergency services activities, such as search and rescue missions, all radio traffic, e-mail and telephone messaging is managed by the COMMS team.

  • COMMS will also establish field based communications command posts, or operate communications vehicles in support of emergency services missions, community events, and other activities.

  • Group communications instructors provide radio operator training and certification testing programs which include: "Communications Unit Leader" for planning and supervision of radio communications, and "Mission Radio Operator" in support of CAP missions.
